Moving to McKinney or Prosper, TX? 8 Decluttering Tips Before You Pack a Single Box

ree

Moving is exciting — but it’s also one of life’s biggest stressors. Between boxes, movers, and deadlines, the last thing you need is to waste time (and money) packing items you don’t even want in your new home.

As someone who recently relocated to North Texas myself, I can tell you firsthand: decluttering before you move makes all the difference. It saves on moving costs, makes unpacking easier, and helps you start your McKinney/ Prosper chapter with a clean slate.

Here are my top 8 tips for decluttering like a pro before your move.

  1. Start sooner than later!

Don't wait until you're weeks out from moving before you begin decluttering and packing! I am telling you, waiting will have you stressed!

  2. Start With the Easy Wins

Kick off your purge in low-stress zones. Toss expired pantry items, worn-out towels, broken hangers, and toiletries you’ll never use. These quick decisions build momentum and clear obvious clutter.

  3. Use the “One-Year Rule”

Haven’t touched it in 12 months? That’s your sign. Donate it, sell it, or recycle it. If it’s not worth the box space, it’s not worth the move. (If you are struggling with this, make it 2 years MAX)

  4. Rethink Your Wardrobe

Texas weather is warmer than many transplants expect. Moving is the perfect time to thin out clothing you never wear or don’t love. A leaner closet means fewer boxes — and easier mornings once you’re settled.

  5. Declutter Seasonal + Location-Specific Items

Be realistic about what you’ll actually need in Texas. Heavy-duty snow gear, broken sleds, or bulky holiday decor you never display? Let it go. Your new home deserves space for what fits your current lifestyle

  6. Create a Donation + Trash System Now

As you pack, keep three categories going: donate, trash, and keep. Schedule a donation pickup in Prosper or drop items at Goodwill, Grace Bridge Resale, or local shelters. Moving day is not the time to figure out what’s junk. Also check to see if Pick up Please is located in your state. They will pick up your donations for you as long as it's not large furniture items.

  7.  Declutter Seasonal + Location-Specific Items

Be realistic about what you’ll actually need in Texas. Heavy-duty snow gear, broken sleds, or bulky holiday decor you never display? Let it go. Your new home deserves space for what fits your curr

  8. Ask for Help or hire help if you’re overwhelmed

Decluttering is emotional and time-consuming. If you’re drowning in decisions, bring in a professional organizer (👋 hi, that’s me!). We’ll create a system, keep you moving, and make sure you only bring what truly matters to your new Prosper home.
